A few folks have asked me how this whole web shop thingy is put together and what do I mean by free software and open source.
My servers run on GNU / Linux. A free operating system (all computer need on to operate).
I use Apache to serve the HTML and multimedia, the content is stored in a database - currently I am using MySQL, and the webscripting language PHP which preprocesses the request for a web page, queries the database and using a template make the web page you are looking at now.
The collection of PHP scripts I am using is called Drupal - it makes things dynamic.
All of the programs are free software. That is free as in freedom. They exist in the public domain and so can be used by anyone. Open source means that you can see the code that produced the program so you can read and modify it. It means people are free to improve the program safe in the knowledge that it can never be taken away from them and they can share the improvements they make. It is I suppose a gift economy. Without this commons much of the internet could not afford to be.
Well all I have done is rattle off a few keywords, basically if you want consulting on web and database hosting you can email me jmhz.
